Because they have only mentioned that it plays Blu-Ray.

knowing microsoft they took this feature out because "no one uses it"

I'm pretty sure backwards compatibility is more useful and look what happened there

Blue ray players can run DVD's least all reason it couldn't here.
currently playing Mass effect 3/Diablo 3 and soon to be path of exile.
