does my xbox one have to be on at all times when I want to watch tv? would that overheat the console if its on for long periods of time maybe? because I do watch a lot of tv

Even if you have the xbone connected to your DVR, you don't have to have your xbone on to watch tv. Only reason to have it on would be if you want change channels via voice command or check the dashboard.

Xbox is designed to be on non-stop for ten years, or something like that.
