So I finally got my XB1 (thanks UPS) and noticed something right away, until the update is done you lose the ability to watch TV (assuming you link your TV through the unit)?

It was an interesting discovery since I had everything wired correctly but it seems I can't watch TV until the system is updated and online.

Am I missing something here or is this the nature of the product that it has to be 'on' or at least in Standby mode to watch TV now with the XB1 in the middle?

To watch TV the xbox has to be on.

(obviously only if youre running it through the box)

It's a "bridge" in a road. If the "bridge" is "closed" you can't get "cargo" from one "town" to the next.

Well, now that I've been using the system for 1/2 hour, I'm thinking I have 2 choices
Bypass Xbox and keep cable box plugged directly into TV (which voids why I wanted the box to
have it in the middle)
Keep Xbox on almost 24x7 so that the TV's readily available for the family when they want it

It's too bad that it comes down to one or the other (unless someone else has a suggestion) but I can't see a way around it.

It was designed to stay on, think there's a standby mode also but not sure yet.

There is a standby mode but even when I put it in Standby mode, the TV feed is cut. I hope I'm just missing the setting somewhere.
