As per wikipedia..

Generation X, commonly abbreviated to Gen X, is the generation born after the Western post–World War II baby boom.[1][2][3] Demographers, historians and commentators use beginning birth dates from the early 1960s to the early 1980s.[4][5][6][7][8][9]

The term was popularized by Douglas Coupland's 1991 novel Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture. It was used in different times and places for various subcultures or countercultures after the 1950s.[10] Gen X describes a generational change from the later Baby Boomer cohort who were born in the late 1950s.[11]

In short, to symbolize the new drastic change.
