They've already done a two-way triangle in starters before. -_-
When? Steel isn't SE against Grass or Ground, so Gen IV didn't. Gens I, II, III, and V each had at least one mono-type so none of them did.
It was the fourth gen.
Infernape had STAB advantages over Torterra (Fire) and Empoleon (Fighting).
Torterra had STAB advantages over Infernape and Empoleon (both times Ground).
Empoleon had a STAB advantage over Infernape (Water), and Ice did more damage to Torterra than any of the STAB advantages (STAB + weakness = 3x damage, double weakness = 4x damage) - and was pretty intuitive (Ice on a penguin).
I grant it's a little unnecessarily convoluted (it actually would have worked perfectly had Empoleon been Water/Ice), but MettanAtem seemed to be mocking the possibility of a double triangle... when Grass/Dark, Fire/Psy, and Water/Fight would actually work better than the fourth-gen's triangle.
