For the way the pokemon games are structured I do the same. But if battles worked in a 3D model like Tales of Symphonia (just for example) I would have a drastically different answer more related to the TC's post.
I guess the closest pokemon game that I have played to this is Conquest. Despite the story, I had a lot of fun playing it. I think I would have to go with range attacks for that one. But in Tales I was always an upfront hand-to-hand attacker.
