What is the justification behind it...?

It's not like steel and water are opposites, at least Dialga looks metallic.

The "best" "explanation" is that pearls are grown in the shells of water animals.

Or Game Freak just gave it that type because Game Freak.

IDK either man. Just because it has pearls on it but it makes no sense

Does it live in water or something? It's supposed to be a space dragon thing.. this particular creature is why there should've been a new type in gen 4 imo. It doesn't look like anything, maybe there could've been a space type.

I assumed it was because pearls are related to water, and/or because water is known for being something that allows you to move in multiple directions and it kinda fits the idea of space (not outer but spatial).

The three dragon legends from Gen 4 also allegedly represent states of matter, with Dialga's steel representing solid, Palkia's water representing liquid, and Giratina's ghost representing gas. I have no idea if that is official or just another fan theory, but just putting it out there.

It's wings also resemble fins of a fish. And its face looks allot like a fish skull

I always figured since Water takes up a large portion of the planet... So it's like the land are the planets/stars/etc. while water is Space in general.

And Dialga being steel type because... using machines to travel through time...

Although I always knew that it was because Diamonds are really hard (though still soft) and Pearls being found in the water...

I just wanted to see other ways.
