That, or they could discover like an extra gene they have in common or something that explains a phenomenon where they were expected to react one way to certain things but reacted quite another, yet as they did not have an explanation for this and they were near enough to Normal types, they just thought it was a unique trait.
As for us not noticing it in-game before, well, we're not Poke-scientists, so what do we know?

It would be too hard to change this many preexisting pokes over to fairy.

Furthermore, the type isn't mutually exclusive. It would make more sense to have celestial/space type than "fairy" type since fairy would encompass both normal and space pokemon as well as others.

All I've heard are rumors which I'm not subject to believe.

Not really, just requires changing some flags in the data files.
