Serious question.

If I want to get into the competitive scene, is Smogon the recommended starting point? Bear in mind that I know almost nothing about competitive play.

There are two things you can do. If you want to start out with competition and in-battle strategy, use Smogon's Pokemon Showdown! simulator. If you'd prefer to figure out all the numbers and the behind-the-scenes stuff, look at IV breeding, EV training, and Natures; the upside to doing this is that you can compete in actual Game Freak-sponsored competitions with the Pokemon you train in-game, unlike the ones you build on Showdown.

And for the cheaters, there are always sites which can pretend to be the GTS and send you perfect, pre-trained Pokemon, if you want to be in Game Freak's tournaments but don't want to settle for a 13 Defense on your 31 Attack 31 Speed Magic Guard Timid Alakazam.

Okay. I might continue with Smogon for now. I gave it a quick try yesterday but wasn't able to do much but make a team and play one battle. I'll read up on everything and take it from there. I won't be getting into anything too serious right now, but thanks for including the pros in IV breeding and everything. I appreciate it :)

Don't IV breed. If you won't succumb to hacking, learn how to abuse RNG. It's quicker and more effective.
Don't get mad, get gllad.

Well I used to follow Smogon, then I got bored of it and went into the unpredictable Nintendo rules dealing with Japanese players who have 5000+ wins using a bunch of RU's and NU's with random movesets.
