I know its always been about friendship (but come on, most people in the original games were a bit more combative than the more recent ones), I thought the "trainers understanding each other thing" was something they started pushing in Gen 5 along with the different points of view thing (they really overplayed that one; When you pound it that much, its like your trying to force that opinion<.<).
Democracy is when 2 wolves and a sheep meet to decide who is for dinner.
Liberty is when the sheep has a gun.
