Im gonna have to go with other. Unless im doing a challenge or something, I like to catch a decent amount of pokemon and go through the game with all of them. I like having at least one Pokemon with each type, for flavor purposes. Its not uncommon for me to cycle between 12-15 Pokemon or so in one playthrough. Im the only one i know that plays this way.
Full team of six usually means five, and then when you're at the end of the game you catch a sixth.
Otherwise, you have four and then halfway point you get a fifth because it's a close level to the rest of your pokemon, so you figure you will just take it because it's a nice powerhouse and addition to your team.
I used to do a full team of six, but I hate putting HMs that suck on my pokemon so i started doing 4-5 and a HM slave or 2 (plus, that way your 4 pokemon level up more). But i heard that they are cutting down on the amount of HMs, and they are not necessary for the main game anymore (at least in gen 5), so i may do a full team of 6 the first time around
I generally play with a full team of 6, although often one or two slots will be taken by Pokemon that aren't part of the regular team (for exploration or catching purposes). I just put HMs on whichever Pokemon I have with me when I need them, and delete them when I get to the Move Deleter.
