Okay, so I see Gen III getting lots of praise on this board and on the internet in general. Incidentally it's also the only generation I never got to play. Never had a GBA, got a DS but Gen IV was out so I just skipped it.

But I'm getting pretty burned out on Gen V at this point and have time to kill until Gen VI comes out. What makes Gen III so special in so many eyes? What does it bring to the table that the other generations don't have that makes it so fantastic? I know it brings a boatload of legendaries and I like their designs.

Not sure how I feel about the music though. I've heard some of it and I'm not overly fond of the trumpets. I can overlook that if there are other redeeming factors.

It's fairly hit or miss, but I'd definitely say try it if you haven't. Though I'd suggest Emerald over RS

Plus, you can use it to bide your time until X and Y

You may not feel the same like me(I love the 3rd Gen)

Because you didn't play it after the 2nd Gen.

3rd Gen introduced better graphics, brighter colors and obviously new Pokemon.

The Running Shoes was introduced in this game.

Weather in game was also introduced(Rain and Sun)

Abilities and Natures were also introduced

It had so many firsts that made it the best in my opinion. Obviously others will have theirs.

The music ranges from decent to good. Gen 3 was big because of the whole Natures/abilities thing. Also expanded on ivs and evs a lot.

Really, you should play at least one Hoenn game, just to say you have. Play Emerald. It's a very good game, and it has the first (and biggest) ever frontier in the Pokemon games. It has a lot of replay value. I currently am planning a team to make for the frontier.

I'm not the biggest fan of Hoenn either, but Emerald is a great game that actually makes me enjoy the region and the Pokemon.

Gen III really upped the popularity of competitive play.

IMO Gen 3 is fun just because it did some interesting things, like half the game was on water and there was a lot of diving and stuff, the story was interesting for the time (there were CG CUTSCENES in Emerald!! lol)

Stuff like that. The region and regional Pokémon have their own charm.

Why not just play it and see if you like it? Can't hurt.

Emerald had one of the best post games in the series. I loved the original battle frontier.

You should always play any pokemon game that is from Gen III to Gen V. They are so much fun and have good mechanics and additions. Even spin-offs (Ranger, PMDs, Conquest etc.)

This is my opinon of course.

Oh yeah, the original contests were a blast! Something you can only get in Gen3.
