Yesterday I had the mindblowing revelation that Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres all have names that have a hint at their element and then a Spanish number for the second part of their name.

I'm noticing this is kind of a trend, two words being combined, for Pokémon names..

Charmander... Char and Salamander. Charmeleon... Char and Chameleon. Treecko... Tree Gecko. Psyduck being the most obvious, Psychic and Duck.

Is there a list out there that shows all the names and where they come from? I'm guessing stuff like Entei and Pikachu are word combinations that aren't obvious until you've taken an Eastern language or something.

I also wanted an official confirmation about where Squirtle's name comes from. My friend, who is a superfan of Pokémon, says it is a combination of Squirrel and Turtle... but I feel like it makes more sense to be a mix of Squirt (water) and Turtle. Is my friend right on that one, though?

Bulbapedia has a section for every Pokemon about this. It's on each of their pages.

i was gonna ask how he even came to that conclusion but then i remembered its weird tail, but i'm pretty sure that tail is just supposed to resemble stylized waves

obviously you're right still

You're both right. Squirtle is a combination of squirrel, squirt, and turtle.

There's nothing official unfortunately. Pokemondb also has a few name origin theories.
