I'm talking about random online battles on 3DS.

If i just catch the right nature and EV train it, will i be fine?

IV breeding is very very necessary for competitive play

Yup. basically unless you play against friends who don't breed for IVs, you're gonna have a bad time.

It's required if you don't feel like getting crushed by any competent player.

I've read speed needs to be 31(or 0 for Ferrothorn etc) but the rest of the stats can be a little lower like 25 or more. I haven't started competitive battling so I'm not too sure how much truth is to that.

Technically yes, but you will always be at a disadvantage. IV Breeding is easy this gen. You really want that speed stat to be at 31 for most if not all pokemon.
