Does anyone know why these kinds of ideas keep getting shot down? Is it difficult to modify the times before archiving?

Because Allen said so...

To the best of my knowledge, the mindset on that hasn't changed. If it does change, the admins will make the change, and it won't be by way of suggestion or petition here. It'll be because Allen and Devin (and anyone else involved in decision-making processes) get together and say "we should adjust the archive times/policies".

I dont claim to know anything about networking, but I presume it might be a bandwidth cost thing?
I dunno. it just seems too obvious not to change this, unless there was money to be lost somehow.
i doubt its a hard thing to physically do either. so probably its a money thing

I dont think Gamefaqs used to be like this anyway, I feel like topics used to stay open a lot longer and boards were more alive, maybe im wrong

It's possible, but archive rates have been pretty much the same for at least as long as I've been active on the boards (around 7 years or so)

Yeah, I can't remember if GameFAQs has ever done a single change to this rule, since I joined the boards here in 2004. Maybe they did one once in the mid-2000s, that I forgot about?

Anyway for now I recommend getting your threads up to at least 6 posts, so you reduce the risk of your threads archiving if less than 30 days has passed since your last post. Once you get to the 6 posts point for a thread, it'll stay up for at least 30 days, if there are 100 or less active posts on that board overall.

Perhaps there could be an exemption/extension for the first X topics on a board? Even the first five would be a huge help to quiet boards where people might not visit very regularly and are likely to miss the short window of opportunity for replying.

Quick archiving also has the side effect of preventing any further discussion from being archived with it, because anyone who wants to respond will have to do so via PM, and can only respond to the original post and not anyone else's contributions to it.

I agree that archiving is better than having the post deleted entirely, but why is it better to archive than to simply leave it open? I'm not aware of any other messageboard systems that do this. I can understand locking topics that are buried pages-deep in the board, but I feel like it should be different when they're still on the top page.

Alternately, could there be some way to apply to have a topic reopened? Limited in some way to prevent abusing it - one per person per day? (per week?)

I assume its done to prevent load on the servers, but also technology has moved on a lot since the current schedule was created. Would imagine modern technology would allow far more topics to be active at one time.

Most active boards don't need an increase as the board moves so fast that old topics get buried anyway. I do think slow boards could use some extra time for topics to remain open though.

I agree - the bigger boards are fine and there will always be some people there to reply to topics, but the smaller boards might not get visitors for weeks and the short time limit makes it very hard to connect with other fans of the game.

I don't think the archiving schedule kills the message boards, but it is annoying. It forces us to create new threads to continue the topic. I've said before that some dead boards have several old topics I started because as I add new info, the original ones archived so fast. It looks tacky, but what other choice do I have if i want to add good info on these threads?
