There's more than just 2 versions.
There were 4 model's of the fat (not including Japan launch machines), and 4 versions of the slim, with a 5th which had another external redesign.
I've got a 5000x fat (dead), 7000x, 7500x, 7700x slim's, and a 9000x final slim.

More than that. PS2 had at least 15 model numbers and motherboard version numbers. Japan had the 10000 series, which had sub models of 10000, 15000, and 18000, then the 30000 series had 3 major models and 2 revision models (ending with R), 30000, 35000, 39000, and 50000 series had the 50000 and 55000 models, then you went to the slims released in 2004, which had several sub models in the 70000 series, and then a model or two of the 90000 series. Last 2 digits of the model number indicate country intended for sale.

I have a Japanese model 50000 and an American Astral Blue model 30001. Both still work. The American slim 70001 I got stopped working just after the warranty expired. Last count, the Japanese model 15000 I used to have and sold to a friend is still working.

If you ran the world, it would probably be on fire right now.
