It was the hip, shiny, new MMO that came out. And after playing the open beta, I thought it was enjoyable enough to buy it.
Ended up quitting before burning crusade, though.

I started playing because the game looked fun and my friends were playing it.

Once I started playing I really got into the lore and I really like the art of the game. Which is probably keeping me playing atm as my friends decided not to play it anymore.

One of them got me to level 55 on a shaman with triple xp. Then to 80 on a DK. Once I hit 80 he pretty much never played so I solo'd from 80-90 and have been pretty much doing LFR as my friend decided to plop me on a RP server so it's pretty hard to find a decent raiding guild.

One of my friends keeps saying he will play he just transferred a character he had to my realm but hasn't played at all. He got game time like a month ago and has gotten from 86-87. Ask him to come on to do a quick dungeon which would take literally take 5 mins with the DPS I can do right now. I mean it's making me quite mad. He complained in 5.2 that the grind was boring and he was going to wait until 5.3 and the less xp per level thing. I then went and bought a 33k mount to ferry his arse around so he could level up faster.

Because it was my first 3D MMO.

And it was actually kind of fun if we go back a while. Then they turned it to shiet. And in the end, once you're not a kid, games designed on insane time wasting lose their appeal.

Why the past tense?

The most applicable answer for me is friends playing.
Long story short, every MMO (except one) up to WoW that I played I had a friend to play with.
Runescape, Helbreath, Ragnarok Online, FFXI and finally WoW.
