Twice this week I put my Windows 7 PC into sleep mode the monitor went off like always but the tower stayed and all. I had to turn the power button off in the back to get it to shut off.

Last time I saw this happening it was because the computer was set to not turn off after a BSOD, and the video drivers crashed so the monitor turned itself off (No signal) but the computer was still sitting there in BSOD mode...

Check out a program called "Who Crashed" to see if you have had any BSOD's that correspond to those events you mentioned... Alternately you can find out how to change the behavior so that after a BSOD it'll reset or shut down or whatever....

Some times sleep mode can be finicky. Make sure your drivers and Windows are up to date.
