I'm at Illburns ruins and I had to run from every enemy to reach the save point in there. I deal 3-5 damage each hit, they deal 30. I can't go back for the items because clearing rooms is almost impossible and if I keep running away I won't level up.

Am I doing something wrong?

Go back where enemies aren't as strong and level up. Jesus rpg 101 man
Steam ID: Mind_Explosion
I thought I chose very easy, not brand new to the game. - CheesyPhil

We would have also accepted "Japanese rpg 101 man".

I cant even get past the first boss in that game
You can tell a lot about a person based on how they treat the weaker members of society.

Enemies tend to feel a bit overwhelming when you first arrive at a dungeon even single level should make it manageable. You really only need to kill a few enemies with how exp scaling works in this game. So, try to kill a few enemies on your way to the savepoint next time, preferably early in the dungeon where there are fewer enemies to deal with. Or you could go back and upgrade your sword back in Redmont. (not advised since you'll be getting a new sword soon)
Trails in the Sky has some of the best writing and most fleshed out world I've seen in a RPG. Now coming to Steam Winter 2013. Sequel confirmed Summer 2014

Either grind for exp or do the grindy battle.

Works either way. 1 makes the game easier and the other makes the game require endurance.

dont skip enemies... try at minimal killing one of every enemey on the screen. you have go out of you way to have that happen to you. yeah the first enemies in an area are gonna be a fair bit harder then the last enemies you encountered. kill them and you will notice your EXP will sky rocket. also with the way the EXP system works (the bigger the combo to more experience you get up to 2X) you should be leveling up on harder enemies really fast.

and yeah the PC version is rather unforgiving the PSP port had the retry offset which let you retry in every room you die. the PC version is definitely a fair bit more hardcore. i hope your not playing it on hard either cause this is one game where the normal mode is a kinda brutal. Origin is also much easier on normal then oath is where as origins hard = oaths normal.

also eventually your gonna get the ability to teleport it makes going back for weapons a whole lot less tedious.

The game requires a bit of grinding in higher difficulties really. You can't really get around that, well if you want to stand a decent chance.

Not to gloat, but if you ever need tips or an example, you can check my videos playing through on Inferno -> (they're not LPs, no voice overs)

It has grinding in it (sped up) if you need the grinding spots, otherwise if you want tips on boss fights, there's the time stamps in the descriptions to get right to them.

Even with grinding on Inferno, a lot of bosses kill you in 2-3 hits. Heck, I recall the first time I played through this game on normal I found it rather difficult. Origin is also surprisingly unforgiving but FAR more annoying than Felghana unfortunately -> I just didn't like it that much in terms of design. Felghana however, I find it to be very satisfying to complete on higher difficulties.

In any case, good luck. You'll need it. Some of the fights on Inferno (Chester's 2nd fight in particular) are probably the most insane boss fight in any game I've played.
