If I'm seeing this right, the reveals tomorrow take place within a couple hours of eachother. Any chance it's not a coincidence? Could Steambox be a real console powered by a next gen AMD gpu?

No it's not. Valve is pretty open about the partnerships they have with other companies in the industry.

I guess my post was assuming they funded the hardware themselves and not partnered just their software.

I think it could work if they went down this route. Steambox launches with the new GPU next year and SteamOS. Existing PC users can choose to buy the GPU and install the SteamOS free, basically making your own Steambox for optimum compatibility. Valve will get devs to target the specs of the new GPU on Steam for all new AAA releases. Of course Steam will still function as it is today, there's really no need upgrade your PC if you just play less demanding games. And, assuming the third reveal was a controller, existing PC owners could obviously just buy that as well.

Only problem is cost. Anything over $600 is dead on arrival in the consumer space, no matter if it's actually a good value proposition. I think $600 could work, only $100 more than the Xbone. Not to mention Steam and it's great software sales, as well as presumably easy OR VR support.

Well, the OS is free, so that should help keep cost down, shouldn't it? If this case itself is cheap (and small), that could also cut costs.

Sub $600 could be doable.
