The mouse pad I have is discolored and has a different texture from the rest of the mouse pad, which I assume is generally from the skin rubbing against it. When my optical mouse goes over that part of the mouse pad, the mouse slows down. Is there a way to sort of fix this?

Soap and water?

I've only cleaned mine once in the 15-20 years that I've had it. And that's only after I spilled beer on it. I used Soap and water.

Soaking it in soap and water for about 30 minutes seems to have done the trick.
