Planning to build a new computer soon with no initial software installed on it. So far, what I've been reading online is that you have to install Windows 8 first before making the upgrade if your machine is on Windows 7 or earlier but what if my computer has no OS installed on it initially? Can I just install Windows 8.1 straight on (from the installation disc)?

Got a product key for Windows 8.1 that came from my school's deal with Microsoft for free software for all graduating students.

You should be able to download a Windows 8.1 ISO from the website that gave you the key.

Uhh no. Windows 8.1 is like 3.8GB and it reinstalls the whole OS. That's why even if you upgrade through the Windows Store you get a Windows.old folder which is basically all the old Windows 8 system files.
