Does it really matter which one I get if the laptop in question already has SLI 750M?

You'll probably want the MQ since it's a quad core.

I know... coming from a 2630QM with 8 threads is hard

But would there be any appreciable gains in the machine's miserable battery life by going with the lower TDP of the i5?

There probably would be a minor battery life increase but a dual core would defeat the point of getting SLI 750M's in the first place.
