Thank you these are brilliant responses, I've never played any sort of pc based space sim before so ill definitely be checking these out, and yeah lol my laptop would never play X3 , that comment actually made me laugh lol.

Even morrowind took me 3 days of tuning and screwing around with the mod manager and related things to get the draw distance playable.

Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos. It's pretty hardcore, though, especially with a keyboard.

Space Rangers 2 is a great game, although it's... well, different. It's a RPG / RTS / text adventure hybrid. I'd recommend at least checking it out.

List of notable Elite Clones:

Tachyon: The Fringe
Darkstar One
X: Beyond the Frontier
X2: The Threat
Wing Commander Privateer
X3: Reunion
X3 Terran Conflict
X3 Albion Prelude
Evochron Mercenary

Feel free to add to the list

X: and X2 and Wing Commander Privateer are safe choices as they should be able to run on a toaster and are easy and cheaply available. Freelancer is a popular and easy to run choice, but it is a bit rare.

You can look into StarMade. Not sure how far along it is but it's basically minecraft in space, you build your own ship and all that. It may not run but it's a tiny download and it's free so it can't hurt to try.
Every time I try to go where I really wanna be it's already where I am, 'cuz I'm already there

Evochron was pretty interesting.

I couldn't exactly get the hang of combat but the game seemed really deep.

What is really interesting though is going right from space down onto a planet without loading screens. You should really at least look it up on steam and see what it has to offer.

Maybe Galaxy on Fire 2 HD?

It was originally a mobile game so it should have forgiving system reqs for PC.

Sins of A Solar Empire Rebellion?

He seems to be looking more for a game centered around him exploring in a ship rather than a 4X inspired RTS. (still a great game though)
