Mac OS disk check utility doesn't report any errors but I wanted to do some further testing. I am also looking for a tool similar to memtest to test the RAM. I suspect something is wrong hardware-wise.
The OS version is 10.4.7 unfortunately.

Is this for a project or something? No utility that anyone currently maintains will run properly on a PowerPC processor.

Though the idea of buying an IDE HDD and DDR1 in 2013 is entertaining.

No, it's an iMac with a 2.16Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo and 2GB of DDR2 RAM. Also the HDD is SATA.

Perhaps this will help: http://osxdaily.com/2011/05/03/memtest-mac-ram-test/

Maybe think about buying an extra 2GB RAM and upgrading to mavericks? A clean install might improve performance.
