Alright, so I'm not super knowledgeable when it comes to resolution, and I'd like some help. I have a 50" plasma that is capable of 1080p, and it looks great! My monitor is.. I don't know where it even came from, to be honest. I run it in 1440x900.

Right now I'm considering getting a DVI to HDMI cable to just use my computer on my TV, cause I think it'd look awesome, but I don't know if that'll actually look BETTER. Obviously my tv is LARGER, but my understanding is that the resolution is what really matters...

To what extent is this true? What resolution is 1080p comparable to? I'd just get a larger monitor, but once you get to the mid-20" range, they're pretty expensive.

you'll get conflicting opinions. The best thing you can do is try it yourself and come to your own conclusion.

Depends how close you'll be sitting to the TV. If it's more than 5 meters then the TV will look better, closer than that the monitor probably will, because a HDTV up close is incredibly blurred and ugly.

If you're TV has overscan that can't be turned off the picture will look like dogs*** and there won't be anything you can do about it., so I would be checking overscan can be turned off first.

Depends, as with almost everything, how much $ you're willing to drop.
