I built my gaming rig back in Fall 2011 and I still haven't upgraded anything (6870, i5 2500K 8GB RAM). I still can run most games on medium-high. If there is money spent on the PC, its during the Steam sales.

The 6870 is an amazing card.

Got mine a few years ago for like $150, and it still plays BF4 on medium setting at a solid 1920x1080 60fps.

As long as you don't pick stupid parts when making your pc, it should last a good while.

It's just something console fanboys say to defend consoles.. The only reason some PC gamers upgrade every year is because they want to maintain ultra settings with 60+ FPS @ 1080p+ resolutions in every game..

You can go without upgrading a PC for years if you are fine with not maxing every single game...

I find it's not a requirement to upgrade frequently, but it is a choice, and once you've got the bug... you're doomed. - updated 11/21/2013

The only people that spent money on their PC every year are those who want to keep the Ultra graphics. I'm sure there are still a few people who game with a 9800GT.. I think there was a vid on Youtube on Far Cry 3 about that one.

Dunno. Got an Acer Aspire 5560G (yes I know its a laptop and not a proper pc, im bored of troubleshooting hardware problems) a year and a half ago for £400 and I haven't found anything it won't play. Even on low/medium settings the games today look damned beautiful and it can max quite a few games from the past couple of years.

It's fanboys of PC gaming. Just ignore them like you would any PS4/XBONE/WIIU fanboy.
