A sport has athletes. Athletes are physical competitors. Video gaming is not physical. Video gaming is not a sport. It's one of the most stupid things humans have done this generation is to dub competitive video gaming a sport. Is Chess a sport?

</endthread>

I have an extremely minimal interest in sports, and even I recognize that it's an insult to athletes everywhere to consider professional gamers "athletes" - true professional athletes spend untold hours running drills, going through rigorous cardiovascular and weight-training routines etc. which is a far far cry from sitting on your ass in front of a monitor for untold hours clicking a mouse and monitoring your APMs. Yes video-games are fun, yes they can be beneficial and many do require good hand-eye coordination and mental sharpness to be competitive in higher level play, but they don't require nearly the training, hard work and sacrifice required to pursue/maintain a position on a professional sports team.

Yeh really man? Why isn't working out your BRAIN considered athletic? Also professional gamers like the people on NiP or Verygames require a ton of work, you should ask them how many hours a day they sit there like football players and study the other teams that they're gonna be facing, or how many hours a week they practice. Guess what, it's a full time job as a sports athlete.

They prob put more hours into just watching and creating strategies than you working a full time job.

dontcha know? it's only a sport if it requires Physical prowess. Dextrous and Mental prowess mean squat in a world full of meatheads

So, I'm confused. I went to a sporting goods store, and they didn't have any video games. I don't get it. Why don't they sell video games there?

I went to a sporting goods store and much to my surprise they didn't sell bobsleds or custom target pistols there either. Moral of the story is that we don't define what constitutes a sport by what a retail chain carries

*sigh* At least they call it E-sports and not just sports. That's more like the special olympics vs the real deal.

Starcraft: Brood War professionals in South Korea practiced for around 10 hours per day.

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=111390

Q: How much do you practice everyday?

Jaedong: More than ten hours a day. There have been plenty of days when I did nothing but practice, eat and sleep. I can’t concentrate unless I get sufficient sleep. I would say around thirteen hours? I can feel my condition go down the drain if I don’t sleep well the day before.

Flash: I would say it’s pretty much the same. There was a time when I only slept for three hours a day and literally did nothing but practice for the remaining twenty-one hours.

How much more would they have to dedicate their days on that to meet your standards?

You know, I really want the definition of sport changed to strictly physical activity only and make a new word for the likes to darts, golf, chess and gaming and lump them all into that word. I don't consider any of the latter 'sports' because I feel it is an insult to athletes who put in so much harsh physical training as opposed to just...practice.

So no, I do not consider gaming a sport, just like the ones I mentioned.

I think the implication here is that there are no hot girls associated with gaming, and that it doesn't exactly make you rich. Well,

and top players can easily draw 6 figures in just one event, so technically, they *could* have houses like that too. I guess based on that criteria, e-sports qualifies then?
