Or could I just attach the 3.5mm jack to it and just plug it into my speakers or computer?

You don't need to, but a good sound card would provide better quality audio. And if you're an audiophile, you'd want a high quality sound card.

Really you can attach any headphones to the 3.5mm jack of a computer. Some headphones just won't sound good at all for various technical reasons, but it will always work to some extent.
As far as the HD 598 are concerned, they should work fine on anything. The one thing to keep in mind is that they may reveal in further detail the "low" quality of your onboard sound solution in ways you may not have experienced before. In other words you may hear things, good or bad, that you never heard before.

Yeah that was unexpected... Going to a nice set of headphones from some budget setup can make you realize why a lot of people look down on 128kbs mp3's. My friends setup was horrible and he insisted that 320 sounded the same as 128 until he tried the same files on my setup without any tweaking.

Hmmm in that case, what are some good sound cards to get? Preferably ones that aren't expensive.

Well the setup I used to show my bud was a 5.1 Yamaha surround sound system with some 777 tower speakers for the front left and right. That's in my home theatre area and not my gaming corner though. Currently I'm only using my sennheiser 558 headphones (my 598's were eaten by a friends dog...Wish it were just the cable not the headpiece). I have an old logitech X530 5.1 surround sound setup hooked up but rarely use it.
