If you want productivity on the go, such as writing or using certain software, get a laptop.
For almost everything else, tablets are great.

Sometimes I web browse or skim articles while sitting on the couch watching TV, and I would rather use a tablet than a much bigger laptop resting in my lap. My laptop is essentially collecting dust now.

Tablets are pretty useful for school and media consumption. I think tablets are a lot more useful than $500 laptops at this point. Laptops are still useful but only high end ultrabooks or gaming laptops are worth getting.

iPad is great. I use mine every day.

Finally have root access. I have a C Compiler, remote debugging with Xcode or IDA, FTP/SSH access, and a handful of good games. Even has vim. With some apps installed from Cydia, it's a decent Unix box that consumes next to nothing in power. C compiler, vim, screen, apt-get... quite a few options. Of course, I run my old laptop as a 24/7 Linux server, so I don't really care much about the C compiler, but I just thought it was cool.

Other than that, it's great for web browsing as long as you don't need to do much typing, reading, playing games, and it can mirror video content to my Roku.
