Depends on the game.

The Thief series was great for non lethal because the tools and level design allowed it to be possible. And it properly rewarded you for it.

And it was explained in the first game that Garret is a thief, not a swordsmen, that's why his sword skills suck. Mostly covering for the poor combat mechanics in the game, but it's a plausible excuse.

If Thief was played on Expert difficulty, you'd fail the mission if you killed anyone. That was the only true way to play Thief, as it gave you all the extra objectives etc.

Though if you tried to kill someone you'd just have a bunch of guards ganging up on you and die pretty quickly anyway.

Mixed. Non-lethal when it's fun and safe to do so, but not fearing to engage when someone pisses me off or there's more than can be taken out swiftly.

Both, all a matter of situation.

Deus Ex?

I had the Shifter mod which puts in some unique weapons. I went non-lethal for th efirst couple of levels until I got Paul's baton, then slaughtered everyone for th erest of the game >_>.

A well designed game would give you the option to do either as the situation warrants, while also providing interesting consequences for each choice.

Mixed on the poll btw. Sometimes you want to make an entrance and sometimes you want to be invisible and sometimes, if you do it right, those two paths might not correlate to what you think they do

He means that the following is not a choice since you don't have to choose between them.

The only time I ever go lethal is when I fail multiple times at non lethal and get frustrated.
