I followed STEP, game looks great and plays great.

Took about 10 hours of modding though.

I'd play the game a bit with just the unofficial patches (make sure you get the ones for any DLC you have), UI fixes and any graphical tweaks you want.

Then take a look at additional content/overhauls/add-ons and see what you might like.

Yeah, I'm on my first playthrough and I used used this. I'm about 19 hours in and its pretty great. The guide focuses on core mods that still stick to the vanilla Skyrim feel, so its pretty good for 1st playthrough.

Best part about it is it covers the essentials, is tested for compatibility, and really guides you STEP by STEP so there is no guessing on how to get things set up.

It can be overkill with some very small unnecessary mods, but hey, if they are tested and work fine, why not?
