I created a system image by using windows utility and I wanted to know if I could boot my OS from it? I went into my bios to change the boot order and the drive does not even show up.

Windows 7, I presume?
The default boot "device" for W7 isn't the drive itself, but "Windows Boot Manager".

Yes you can.... If you clone a boot drive to your SSD and then boot of it... it will not be as fast as a fresh install. For speed I would do a fresh windows install on the SSD.

Use Raid or AHCI.... AHCI being the best. Change the boot order in bios.
