Are Dual GPU's cards like the 7990 and GTX 690 outdated? I don't mean that particular card, but the setup itself.

Outdated? Probably not. Pointless? Absolutely.

You can't have more than 4-way SLI (2 of them), so it's better to just get 4 single GPU's.

The way it works is a dual GPU, say the 690, will have two downclocked 680's on board. So it's bette rto just have 2 regular 680's without the downclock, and they can be had for around the same price.

Only reason I can think of using a Dual GPU card is if you only have a single slot open. Power consumption? PC is gonna eat a lot of power anyway if you game a lot.

Or if you want Quad SLI/Crossfire configurations and only have 2 slots for GPU's.

Aren't the specs for GTX 790 rumored to include dual GPU?

I meant in terms of usefulness. It just doesn't seem useful to me anyways. Seems redundant to buy a card that has two gpu's in it that are downclocked. Even if there's a switch like the 6990 has it still seems redundant.

I'd never use one but they definitely have their place. If you want maximum performance in a minimal form factor (mitx specifically since they only have one PCIe slot) they're an excellent option.
Every time I try to go where I really wanna be it's already where I am, 'cuz I'm already there
