This is my first time building a pc. so the parts I pick out are ok and do I need a thermal compound or it comes with the cpu?

You don't need that motherboard, since the CPU you choose is a 4430 that can't overclock, the Z87 chipset is not necessary. You could save a bit with a cheaper H87 motherboard.

You don't need a thermal compound. Also probably overspending on the mobo (you have a Z87 mobo selected but not a CPU that can overclock) and the PSU by a bit.

Check this build out, features a GTX 770 which is a much stronger card than the 270x you had.
