Has anyone upgraded processor and motherboard without reformatting their hdd?

I have windows 8.1 and I dont really want to reformat. I know it would work and boot but will it create any instability or bugs down the road? Should i just reformat?

It most likely won't boot and you will need to reformat.

I've changed motherboards before without a reformat, no problems. Have win 7 though.
