I am currently shopping for a portable laptop for medical school (web surfing and word processing).

I hear the Samsung ATIV 9 have touchpad problems. But I don't like the gimmick that the lenovo yoga 2 has (convertible thing).

My requirements are no Mac products and must have at least 128 GB ssd.

I recommend the Thinkpad T440s.

It has a good keyboard for extended typing. You can get up to 15 hr of battery with the 6 cell, 72 Wh battery or about half that with the 3 cell (the 6 cell protrudes from the bottom).

Recommended customizations:
1920x1080 screen for more screen real estate
HDD and do the aftermarket upgrade to SSD yourself.
Base RAM, aftermarket upgrade
Intel 7260AC wifi
6 cell, 72 Wh battery

OK, good for you. The Surface Pro is so much more than a tablet.

Why no Mac products? The Macbook Air 13" is one of the best and cheapest high end ultrabooks available. ($999 after student discount).

I have an ASUS S400 and I love it.

13" screen.
5-6 hour battery life.
Touch screen.
Windows 8.
~$500 USD.

Incredible bang-for-your-buck. I didn't buy it for games, but its got an HD4000 integrated GPU, so it can handle relatively-new games easily.
