Or is some new upgrade coming soon that will cause prices of current ones to drop? I want to spend around $1100 and hopefully run modern games in high settings.

There's ALWAYS a new upgrade coming soon. Always.

I know how everyone says you can get a desktop for the same price and perform better but it is simply not true. Everyone who says that assumes the person has a monitor, keyboard and OS at hand. When those things are added the price goes way up. For this reason I am forced to buy laptops to play in even though I would much prefer a desktop.

You won't find many laptop supporters here, but I know that the 860M was just released, so it is probably a good time.

You can spend $400 on a console and $400 on a cheap PC, or you can spend $800 to build your own and have the best of both worlds.

^You could get something like for at least a budget of $1800.

So I'd say they're definitely worth it... If you have the money to burn.
