The more popular something is, the more it's going to get pirated. Can't really get around that.

The often overlooked fact is that it's easily getting a crapton of legit sales at the same time. So inflated piracy numbers mean the game is getting purchased just as much if not significantly more.

So yeah, the second option, easily.

I sold 3 million games via digital distribution, would I really care that a million Chinese guys stole it? They were never going to buy it.

Kind of a false dilemma but if it sold 3 million I would be happy.

Forgot the key piece of info. How much did I need to clear dev costs?
Some roads you shouldn't go down because maps used to say there'd be dragons there. Now they don't, but that don't mean the dragons aren't there.

20p for a yearly sequel/rehash development, but 30M in marketing and advertisements.

I'd be indifferent to it. Annoyed that it's getting pirated, but happy that it's selling.

Go into merchandising on your game website. Shirts, figures, knickknacks, mugs whatever to sell at this hype time to further your profits. Put up guides and what not to lure people there.

Set up a no questions asked donation link. Like us and our products click here and feed us coins. A lot of piracy is just uncertainty and price disappointment. Its insignificant as to how true or what rate that might be at because it costs nothing to set up a payment portal marked as gift and all you will get from it is more money.

Make the effort at least to adapt to market. You try to change it your just pissing in the wind. There are dozens of ways for them to make more money and the effort on some is nil.
