I have a question regarding my current build (in my sig) and replacing it with the MSI Z97-G45 Motherboard and the 4790k could do for me compared to what I have. I'm not sure how to apply the increase in benchmarks. Can someone give me a concrete description on what that entails like getting a few more frames and what not. It's an expensive upgrade so I'm not sure if I should pour $400+ dollars into a few more frames and minimal increase in performance

Yeah, not worth it, really. And you shouldn't have problems reading benchmarks if you're looking at gaming benchmarks, because oh woah! they're measuring FPS! Most other benchmarks are fairly useless for determining gaming performance differences.
