Same. So many games had that horrible pop in. Even their showcase titles like mass effect and gears of war. Just horribly immersion breaking for me. It's generally a lot better these days but my OCD definitely kicked in with the earlier blockbusters.

"Damn, I dislike this one aspect of the game. Lemme se if I can mod it- oh crap it's Unreal engine, can't mod it in the slightest. Guess I'll just have to not be 100% satisfied with the game due to them using an engine that forces assets to be heavily encrypted to be used :/ "

Seriously, that is probably the biggest reason why I feel Unreal is hyped too much. People complain about not enough games being made for PC first and console second, but quite literally the compiling process of Unreal actually FORCES devs to develop for consoles first and PCs second by stifling modding with heavily encrypted assets...

My first thought is "oh great, another game where everyone looks like they've been coated with shellac"!

For some reason Unreal Engine games look weird, everything is just too shiny.

Is really that bad when a scene loads and it takes like 5 extra seconds for a few textures? I haven't even played Gears on PC but Gears on 360 had just a few seconds then everything popped in fine. It never happened during gameplay either./

Nowadays it makes me think of the UE3 games which have a habit of looking like garbage.

Everything Epic did with it was AWFUL. Gears of War was the ugliest UE3 game by far, with UT3 taking a 2nd, no contest.

It shocked me, how bad those games looked and still do. But then other games used it and those games looked good enough. Enough that I did not recognize the engine.

Its what UE makes me think of nowadays, since I linked it to the epic betrayal and death of Epic Games as I knew it.

But on a positive note, I do still think of Unreal 1, and its one of the best damn game ever.
