Currently running an E8400 with 4GB RAM, but looking to upgrade to something more current. I do play PC games quite a bit. I already own the rest of the system, so I'm not concerned about GPU, PSU, etc.

Yeah, I'm overclocking to 4GHz and have a GTX560 at the moment.

I feel like I need a second opinion on this, because I got the parts I'm still using for ~$400 6 years ago. I can't imagine it wouldn't be worth some sort of upgrade at this point.

I just noticed you said that you plan on keeping your case, HDDs, GPU, etc. Disregard what I said. If you bump that budget up by about $100 you could easily do a 4690K + 8GB of 1600MHz RAM + whatever mobo you like. If DDR3 prices weren't so f***ed right now it would've almost been possible with your current budget.
4670K OC | 2GB PNY GTX 770 OC | 8GB 1600 | 120GB SSD | 1TB WD Blue | Gigabyte Z87MX | EVGA 600w | BitFenix Phenom M | Win8.1 Pro

You could get an 8320 a 990fx board and 8g of 1600 ram for under that. Would leave some headroom for shipping and a decent cooler so you can OC it up a bit.
Drugs are never the answer, unless the question is what isn't the answer.

In that case, assuming you're still overclocking (but need a new cooler)

i5 build ($465 before rebates):
