Bought it on Steam awhile ago, tried to play it and it started up, but would not go further than the character creation screen. Said I needed Games for Windows Live. Did not want to deal with it so I turned it off and have not looked back.....until today

Now I go to start it on Steam and it won't even start up, just says " Dark Souls Prepare To Die executable has stopped working"

Anyone know what the problem is?

Happened to me, GFWL was not installed properly. Get it from here:

Reinstall first, see what happens.

But it's not just you, the game has a few hurdles with getting it started. Google will get you through it, most of it seems well documented because the problems are prolific.

So I re-installed it and tried again, same problem. Then I installed GFWL from that link and it won't run either, so I re-installed that too and it still won't run. Oh well I guess.

Did you have any mods? When you uninstalled, they would remain there and they may be outdated by now. Manually delete them if you did install any.

If you have a high refresh rate monitor, I heard that dark souls doesn't play well with some of them.

I've heard of people having that problem. If it is set to over 60 htz try lowering it.
Check out my SL 1 playthrough of Dark Souls II on my channel Izzy Games.

There are a few different solutions floating around.
