Just for the story alone? No. If you don't otherwise like the game, it's not worth slogging through the missions just for some voices and text blurbs with poorly animated 90s-3D faces. It is a good story, mind, but those missions can get long and if you aren't into the game, you're not going to learn it fast enough to keep up.
For the single player in general, though, it's totally worth playing SC1 and Brood War if you like the games but don't like playing with other people. They're solid games.

Yeah, I think so. It's one of my all time favorite video game stories. If you can get your hands on the manual, you may want to read the backstory inside.
... even on Earth Mode.

Yeah especially the part when a bald raynor came to discover space rogaine is worth 5 playthroughs.

This is pretty much the best answer you're gonna get.
If you like the game, then the singleplayer is worthwhile and the story is good.
If you don't like the game, it isn't worth the effort.
If you've never tried the game, just download it and see if you like it.

The story's pretty great. Not mindblowing, but it's one of the more memorable stories of the genre, and one worth playing through.

You can use cheats if you're having a hard time. Near the end of the Zerg campaign, it does get pretty difficult, but you'll have plenty of time to improve before you get to that point.
