I currently have the gtx 780 along with an i7 3770K @ 3.5GHz and 12 gigs of RAM. I wanna upgrade to a 1080 or 1080ti. Would it be worth the money to upgrade the mobo, CPU and RAM along with the GPU or will what I'm running now still work fine?

Get the 1080Ti, or if you're a red team guy, the new Vega 64.

No need to upgrade. GTX780 is still plenty for 1080p very high settings at 60 FPS.

For pre-2015 games you mean. It's definitely showing it's age for the latest titles.

To actually answer the question (crazy I know)

No you dont need to upgrade. Would it be "worth it" is up to you. You'd probably see a couple FPS higher in a few minimum FPS situations with the very newest games running at ludicrous physics/geometry at 4K settings. Other than that, the 3770K still gives 0 s***s about any game I throw at it, and outside gaming it still handles production work with great aplomb.

As someone who went from a 780 to a 1080 (and now waiting on my 1080Ti step up) it's a huge difference for VR and 4K gaming. I built my computer at the very end of 2013 and it's still doing just fine. I expect to keep this motherboard and CPU for at least another 5 years unless something drastic happens to make me consider building again.

The only way I'd personally rebuild to upgrade would be if there was some new performance boost technology that was suddenly needed for everything or a new interface that offered significant advantages over what I've currently got. USB-C isn't enough for me to upgrade (yet).

I feel like most of my reasons to upgrade will be tied to VR. Like if there's a new hardware tech that improves VR performance, I'll be more inclined to upgrade.

Of course you have to find your own reasons for why you'd want to upgrade, but I don't really think there's much reason to do so yet. Like DXMG said, there's probably few games that would seriously tax the CPU.

I went from a 780Ti to a 1080, and the difference was definitely noticeable. The problem I was having with the 780Ti was the lack of Vram, and the 1080 solves that. So I think you'll be happy with your upgrade, be it the 1080 or 1080Ti.
