right, forgot about booster packs that contain 3 cards... probably because i don't recall getting any.

If you're under level 100 you can basically forget about ever getting a booster pack...I'm almost to level 200 and I see a lot of booster packs, but it almost seems like you're more likely to get a booster pack if you make a badge. If you never make badges and you're only level 10, you basically consigned yourself to "better odds of being struck by lightning".

At level 100 you'd see one every few months, and at level 170 I was seeing a booster pack once a week or so.

Eh, at LV100 I was seeing at least one to two booster drops a month, sometimes more if it was during a promotional period like the Summer Sale.

But yeah, at LV 181 I'm seeing a booster drop every week or so it seems. What sucks is a lot of times it's for games I already LV5'd the badge for. LOL

I have been keeping track of every booster pack I've gotten since 2014 and I never got a booster pack every other week unless it was during a major sale when everyone was making badges.

It speeds up and slows down, and your drop rate is a percentage of total drops based on your steam level.

People at the top get more than people at the bottom. I was getting a booster pack once every 4-5 days but it has slowed down again.

I highly doubt you get a booster pack every other week at level 35 when others I know around your level barely ever see a drop.

Guess I'm just lucky, as you said yourself it's all chance.

Wow, thanks for the detailed message on how these all work, I never took the time to learn about them. Now that I see what they are really for I now know that I was correct in not paying attention to them and can continue to ignore them :)

Except to sell them for real money.

How much real money are we talking about? I would assume it would take a lot of attention and work to get to a level that would make it worth it (for me at least), but maybe I am mistaken.

I have a number of cards from the games I have played, anyone want to buy them :)

As little as 3¢ and maybe $5 for a foil card (though you'd be lucky to find someone willing to pay that).

Most games are going to be in the 30¢ and under range. A few more might go as high as $1 per card but the more it costs the longer you'll wait for it to sell. You can check the current price of your cards by just looking at them in your inventory.

Like that... see?

You'll notice it also has a gem value. This is because Valve released too many cards and they were all worthless so they invented a 2nd currency that you could use to make new (potentially more valuable) cards.

So you grind the card up into gems and it gives you the value listed there. After you have 1000 gems you can bundle it up in a pack and sell that on the market. I think the last time I looked the gem sack price was kinda low but it's normally around $1 for 1000 gems (+ or - 20¢)

So you can see there I could make 2 sacks of gems, or I can use it to make booster packs. Booster packs cost a varying amount of gems depending on how many it takes to make a badge. If it only takes 5 cards to make a badge it's probably 1200 gems to make a booster pack, and if it's one of those insane 15 card badges then it might be as low as 400 gems.

So right there, it's 77¢ for 1000 gems. You can use that to figure out if it's worth more to sell the card or to just grind it into gems and sell the sack (or use the gems to make a more valuable booster pack)

I should add that in some rare situations, you can make a bit of money off of buying sacks of gems and then creating booster packs, then opening the booster packs and selling the individual cards.

Last time I was able to do this was with Undertale. The cost of the cards was high enough and the cost of the gems and booster pack was low enough that I made a bit of money off of each card sold. I was mostly doing it to get foil cards though. I didn't really want the 5 cents of profit off of each card as much as I wanted to get foil cards without paying through the nose.
