I'll probably buy one when/if it goes down to $200.

IIRC, it's a lot more setup, but the experience is a lot better for it.

Yeah. General consensus is that the Vive is better than Rift.

Do either of you own a Vive and Rift?

Glad I held off on buying this until I start the new job next month.

Nah, Vive is less setup. I prefer the Vive but their experience is about equal now.

Setting up the vive involves connecting to Lighthouse base stations to the wall and to an electrical outlet and the rest of it is connected via a link box to the HDMI port and one USB port.

Conversely setting up a rift involves connecting two or three cameras to a USB port each which ideally should be on different host controllers and then connecting it to the computer with HDMI.

I think we're still at least a year away from the Next Generation so if you are interested in VR this generation then now would be a good time.

Also if you don't care anything about room scale then the rift being cheaper is probably something you would want. Of course once you've tried some games with room scale you will probably change your mind about room scale.

To me it sounds like the rift is more work to set up. Also setting up the vive doesn't involve Facebook in any way shape or form.

Vive also supports Fallout 4 VR and Skyrim VR which won't support Occulus due to Zenimax vs Facebook.

I'm honestly very sad that Zenimax is f***ing with VR this early in stage of development.

I just looked that up. I didn't know that.

I guess I'll be passing on the Rift then.

Because both are PC games, you can bet money on the fact that somebody will make it work on both headsets. Question is, will it be perfect? And how badly does Zenimax hate Oculus? This will determine how much effort they put into blocking the Rift.

Does the Vive need the base stations if I'm not doing room scale?

Current place doesn't have space but I'm moving in a few months so I hope to take advantage then.

Vive is unusable without being in line of sight to at least one base station. You can however just place it on a shelf or stick it on a tripod for temporary use.
