Been thinking about doing a new build know everything I want for the build except processor. I'm undecided between a 4 core and 6 core processor. Usually when I use my PC I got like 2 google chrome windows open with around 40 tabs open, discord, sometimes video editing program, a game open and steam. Is this enough to justify a 6 core processor or should I stick to four?

Currently got a I5 2500k, 8GB RAM and a GTX 980 Superclocked. I'm unhappy with the speed of my computer though. Seems like whenever I am playing games I get good performance in-game above 60 FPS consistent on high settings, but borderless window mode I try to alt tab to chrome it just goes super slow and often when I'll click on a tab it seems to take forever to load the tab when I'm in a game and it's not a internet issue it's like chrome freezes like the processor is trying to catch up. I also would like to add I run a dual monitor setup at 1920x1080 both monitors. In-game performance I'm happy with, but it's anytime I try to alt tab while playing a game to go on chrome or discord or steam the computer then starts running at a snail's speed for any of those programs if I have a game open.

Sounds more like a ram/pagefile issue than a CPU issue. More cores wouldn't hurt you but I'd grab an SSD and put your page file on that and see if it helps before upgrading to a new CPU. More ram would likely also help but I'd hate to buy DDR3 at this point.
Every time I try to go where I really wanna be it's already where I am, 'cuz I'm already there

Well you already have 4 cores so not much of an upgrade there. A Ryzen 6 core or even 8 core (if you're looking to spend some real cash) with 16GB of the fastest DDR4 you can afford and an SSD would be a big jump. Keep the 980, still using one with my other PC (i7 6 core/12 thread 3930K) and its still a really good card.

You also won't need a new mobo and ram when you want to upgrade your CPU due to AMD's mobo's working with even upcoming CPU's.
