Not before Windows 7 extended support ends, which will be January 2020.

I've heard people mention how running in DX12 is laggy. Is that true? I'm not sure why something like that would cause input lag

Very few games remain being developed with DX12 natively. So called DX12 enhancements onto DX11 based games really are a mixed bag of results, and as it seems very hardware brand and driver dependent.

DX12 could be mainstream right now if they didn't try to artificially restrict it. Consoles have "exclusives" to get people to move to their crappy hardware, and Microsoft is trying to use DX12 exclusive to get people to move to their crappy software.

Any time you see someone using tactics like that, it's because they're weak and need the extra help.

Example: Apple trying to sue Samsung over the rectangular shape with rounded corners on their phones.

That wasn't because Apple really needed to prove they invented the shape. It was because Apple was weak and needed to do SOMETHING to fight against the competing product. Since they couldn't do it with superior hardware, they chose to b**** about the rounded corners being too much like their own.

Yahoo once started a lawsuit claiming software patents were violated because a competing chat/gaming client (Xfire) was outperforming their own (The All-Seeing Eye). Oh and they were also butthurt about the guy leaving Yahoo to start up Xfire.

Bethesda vs Oculus? Same thing... if they really had a way to compete they would have just stomped Oculus into the ground but since they didn't they had to argue that Carmack stole s*** from them.

tl;dr exclusives are the domain of the weak. DX12 will never be mainstream as long as it's restricted to Windows 10

Hopefully never. Vulkan does the same thing without platform restrictions. Hell, it does it better.
