I need to replace the current card in my PC and would like to go with a Nvidia card this time around. My current card is an AMD HD 5850 1GB. I do not need anything big and fancy as my PC is quite old and would prob majorly bottleneck anything juicy.

A GTX 1050 maybe? Even that would probably bottleneck but it's your best modern option.

This?

Do not think my board supports PCIe 3.0 though. It is like 10 years old.

I have been wanting to replace the board and cpu, but I do not have the money right now.

All modern GPUs are PCIe 3.0, so you will likely just need to bite the bullet or stick with your current GPU.

If you're willing to risk buying used there should be alot of better graphics cards available for cheap

If it must be new, even the GT 1030 would be an upgrade over the HD 5850, but yeah, the CPU is too outdated to play anything modern

OK. I had thought it was not backwards compatible, but it is.

I do not play anything "modern" really and only use resolutions around "720p"-ish. So, not a huge deal.

I think I will get the 1050 for now and save up some money for a new board and cpu.

Thanks for the card recommendations.

Your board can still use a 3.0 card. It just can't take advantage of the full bandwidth. Stick with the 1050 or 1050 Ti, though even the Ti is probably overkill for your system specs. These shouldn't need additional power either unless they are one of the rare variants on the market. GT 1030 is a pretty crap card and not really meant for gaming. It might be an upgrade over what you have, but it isn't worth putting money into IMO.
